💳 Intro to Japan Airlines, A New Delta Deal & More News and Deals from Sense per Point ✈️

Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Rewards Debit Card?: Southwest is launching a rewards debit card! Not my cup of tea, but if you’re interested, take a look here.

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone is doing well 😊

Last week I wrote about the new Amex Platinum and all the credits that came with the changes. It’s super exciting, but oh my, is it a bit of a chore to go out and use the credits!

The new Resy and Lululemon credits are on a quarterly basis. Q3 ends next week, so there’s not a lot of time left to use the credits for this quarter! So I gotta go eat out and get some athleisure quick 🏃

Of course, these are good problems to have! Figuring out how to use your points, and how to use your credit card benefits are generally good problems to have, and hopefully this newsletter has been somewhat helpful with those questions thus far 👍️

In today’s edition:

🗾 Japan Airlines 101 🗾

So the actual news is that Capital One added 3 transfer partners: Qatar Airways, Preferred Hotels & Resorts I Prefer, and Japan Airlines! For the purposes of this story, I only really care about one of them, as indicated by the title.

Having Qatar Airways as a transfer partner for Capital One is a bit redundant - they already have British Airways as a transfer partner, and you can transfer miles to Qatar from British Airways directly. As for Preferred Hotels, while this is a good partner to have and is decent at a 1:2 transfer ratio, Citi has a 1:4 ratio for Preferred Hotels, so it’d be better to transfer via Citi. There are some deals here, to be fair, but I’ll go into that another time.

As for JAL, however, since Bilt is the only other transfer partner in the US, this gets a bit interesting. It’s also interesting because there are a few sweet spots in their award chart 📈

So with the news, I wanted to dive into JAL a bit! To start with the precautions when transferring to JAL and using their miles:

  • Miles expire in 36 months, no matter what - nothing can be done to extend them.

  • There are fuel surcharges - outlined here.

  • No changes to flights once booked! But they can be cancelled.

  • There are limits to who you can book for other than yourself, as shown in the family chart below.

This reminds me of AP Biology, and I’m not sure I like that…

But with that out of the way, let’s get into some sweet spots!

  • Business class between the US and Japan for as little as 55k miles each way!

    • Economy is 27k miles each way!

  • Business class between New York (JFK) and Milan (MXP) on Emirates for 60k miles + ~$150 in taxes and fees each way

  • Business class between New York (JFK) or Miami (MIA) and Santiago, Chile (SCL) on LATAM for 60k miles + $5.60 in taxes and fees each way!

  • Business class between Orlando (MCO) and Paris (CDG) on Air France for 60k miles + $5.60 in taxes and fees each way!

There’s probably a bunch more sweet spots that I missed here, but you get the general idea - JAL is a program with some great opportunities to book Business class at reasonable rates! Through October 22nd, the transfer ratio between Capital One and JAL is like almost 1:1, so take advantage of that if you can! It’ll go back to 4:3 after that, so 55k miles in JAL will actually cost you 74k Capital One miles, and so forth.

Happy travels 🧳

✈️ Delta Flash Sale 💰️

The deal ends today!

A pretty short story here, but there are some new deals from Delta! Do always compare the deals to the cash prices too, in case that works better for you, but flash sales are always good news! 📰

For this time around, Delta has deals from various locations in the US to Asia (Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, etc.) and to Australia, in early 2026. The rates from the West Coast are lower than the East Coast, naturally, but considering what SkyMiles are typically worth, I think there could be some value here.

For instance, I see LAX-BNE for 40k points round trip + $124, as well as LAX-TPE for 44k points round trip + $46. Just a few examples of some good deals imo!

Remember, if you have a Delta credit card, you can get 15% off of these rates. That means you could go from Los Angeles to Brisbane for as low as 34k points roundtrip!! Some airlines charge 35k one-way from the US to Europe alone 🤯

This deal expires today, so go in and take a look while its still up!

  • ✈️ Breeze has another deal, this time 35% off base fares, with promo code NATURE

  • 🇫🇷🇳🇱 If you book a flight on Air France or KLM from the US, you can get 10k miles! Details here for Air France, here for KLM.
