Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Oof: Swiss messed up and now their new First Class is too heavy for their Airbus A330s - who on the Swiss team did this 😂

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend 😊

I had an amazing one at Acadia National Park! Good hiking, good lobster, good vibes and good views of nature and the starlit sky all made for a great time! The trip may actually be my favorite trip of the year, which is ironic, because I didn’t use any credit card points for it! 🏞️

So yes, I recommend a trip up to Maine & Acadia, and maybe even one-up my trip and plan it using points & miles! Hopefully my newsletter can help you do that! 🧳

Me finding inner peace at Acadia! (Thanks for the photo, Thomas 👍️)

In today’s edition:

✈️ Southwest’s Got Deals 💰️

Southwest recently released some sweet deals, including a great way to get Companion Pass, faster ways to hit A-List, and more!

For anyone not familiar with Southwest Companion Pass, it allows you to designate one person (companion), and when you fly, that person can fly with you for just the taxes and fees of the flight (usually $5.60 within the US!). This is a good deal, for sure, and now there is a faster way to get it!

Until today, if you book a roundtrip or two one-ways, and travel on those flights by 11/20, you’ll get Southwest Companion Pass from 1/6/2025 to 3/6/2025! One roundtrip and you get just about the closest thing to a BOGO for flights 💰️

As if that were not good enough, Southwest also made it easier to reach their A-List and A-List Preferred status until November 30th, through:

  • ✈️ 2x Tier qualifying points on Southwest flights

  • 💼 3x Tier qualifying points for business travel booked through their business channels (GDS, SWABIZ®)

  • ✈️ Rewards flights count as Tier qualifying flights!

  • 💳️ Earn 2,000 Tier qualifying points per $5000 spent on Southwest credit cards!

  • 🚗 Earn with partners for things like car rentals, hotels, etc.

You’ll be able to see these details once you login to your Southwest account - but if you were pursuing Southwest status anyways, this looks like a big win, especially the part where reward flights counting as Tier qualifying flights. Either way, it is a bit easier to hit the requirements for Southwest status, if that is at all interesting!

Factor in the fact that Southwest gift cards go on sale at some retailers, as well as a promotion to buy Southwest miles for 40% off (I personally wouldn’t do this, but it might be worth it for some??), and Southwest has got quite a few deals here.

Some good reasons to fly Southwest in the near future! ✈️

🇫🇷 Flying Blue Promo Rewards 🇳🇱

Photo by Adam Khan on Unsplash

Well, its a new month, and that means that Flying Blue’s monthly Promo Rewards are back at it again!

By now, you’ll generally know how this works - on the first of the month, Flying Blue (mileage program of Air France and KLM) releases Flying Blue Promo Rewards, which are monthly promotions where select routes are offered for 25% off the original mileage price. Every month!!

For this month, the North American destinations selected for this discount are New York, Washington, Ottawa (in business!), Montreal, Las Vegas and Phoenix! In addition, the New York-Algiers and the Washington-Nairobi route is also discounted for the month! 🦒

This month’s select locations!

One great thing for this month is that there is also a 20% transfer bonus from Capital One to Flying Blue! That means that on top of the 25% discount you see on these routes, you’ll also be able to take advantage of Capital One’s bonus too. Nice way to double dip on your rewards!

For example: An economy ticket with this promotion from JFK to CDG costs 15k miles + taxes, down 25% from the usual 20k miles + taxes. But if you have Capital One points on top of this, you’ll only have to transfer 13k miles to Flying Blue due to the transfer bonus!

This deal gets good in business class as well - with Ottawa getting selected for business class discounts, the award costs go down to 37.5k + taxes. With the Capital One transfer bonus, that goes down to 32k Capital One miles, for business!! By the way, some programs charge more than 32k miles to get to Europe in economy, so to be able to fly business for 32k points is definitely a good deal!💸

Ottawa might not be the most desirable destination to fly business class or to reposition for a flight, but it could be worth it for some! Could be an addition to an existing trip to Europe, too, especially if you fly KLM business class for that cute Delft House! 🍁 🇳🇱

Do take advantage if you are looking to get to Europe! 🧳
