Making Sense of Points & Miles :)
Question for readers: Would a “Best Credit Cards” section in this newsletter be helpful?? I’m thinking of adding it, but want to make sure that it would offer value. Let me know!
Welcome Back!
Happy August 😊
My newsfeed for past week has been full of highlights from the Olympics, and it’s been exciting to see! And did you know Chase has a lounge at the Olympics for cardholders?? These companies really want to control the events space, with Amex and Chase set to go head to head at the US Open soon 🎾
I’m briefly pausing on the stores on what tools I use to maximize my rewards for this week’s stories, but it will come back in the future. The transfer bonus list also grew quite a bit today, so let’s get into it!
In today’s edition:
🏦 A New Chase Travel Insurance 📃
Sometimes, things happen while traveling that require you to change or even cancel your plans. Because of things such as lost baggage, an accident, a long delay or cancellation of a flight, flexibility has been a key selling point for certain pricing levels of flights, hotel rooms, and more. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to any of you! 🤞
On top of that flexibility: if you didn’t know yet, travel credit cards do come with some travel protections built in, assuming you paid for your flights/hotels/car rental/etc. with that card. I came across a great tool to see what travel benefits exist across different travel cards, found here! You can also read this article on the CSR’s travel benefits as well.
But the story this week is that Chase announced they will be switching the administrator and underwriter for their travel insurance from eClaimsline to Assurant. These names don’t mean a whole lot on the surface, so I’ll go into what is changing. 📄
So this change will go live as of October 1st, 2024, with the launch of a separate site just for viewing benefits and filing claims for Chase Travel Insurance. So there will be a centralized place to go to for all coverage, whether it be travel, auto, or even cell phone. This seems positive! ➕
As for dollar amounts, some select Chase products will get:
✈️ Increased travel accident insurance coverage from $250,000 to $500,000
🧳 Lost luggage reimbursement if not already part of a card’s benefits
🛡️ Extended warranty protection upgraded from $10,000 per claim and $50,000 for the life of the account, to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per year
🚗 Auto rental coverage that includes more vehicles, with coverage up to $60,000 for eligible vehicles with an MSRP of $125,000 or less
🦺 Emergency Evacuation and Transportation provided directly - so the user no longer needs to pay upfront for reimbursement
On the surface, this all seems pretty positive! However, I’m a bit worried here about the rollout of this being a mess in early October. Ideally, Assurant will be well prepared here, and the documentation needed to process claims won’t have changed (always keep your receipts!!).
Insurance is not something people want to think about all the time, but it’s good to know what you are entitled to just incase something happens. In that regard, I do recommend refreshing yourself on your benefits before a trip! And know that Chase’s benefits will change slightly soon.
Hopefully Assurant is ready and competent come October 1st! Otherwise, they won’t be Assurant - they’ll just be Ass 💩

🇫🇷 August’s Flying Blue Promo Rewards 🥖
It’s the first of the month, and that means that Flying Blue (Air France and KLM) are back with another monthly award flight discount!
If you didn’t already know, Flying Blue (Air France and KLM) launches their Promo Rewards on the first of every month, offering 25% discounts on award rates for select routes to and from Europe. As their standard pricing for North America to Europe is 20k points in economy, 35k points in premium economy, and 50k points in business, these deals can sometimes get you to Europe for as low as 15k points (plus taxes and fees)! 🇪🇺
For this month, the North American destinations getting discounts to Europe are Boston, Detroit, Houston, and Toronto! In addition, the Atlanta-Paris-Nairobi route is also discounted for the month! 🦒
One great thing for this month is that there is also a 25% transfer bonus from Citi to Flying Blue! That means that on top of the 25% discount you see on these routes, you’ll also be able to take advantage of Citi’s bonus too. Nice way to double dip on your rewards!
For example: An economy ticket with this promotion from BOS to CDG costs 15k miles + taxes, down 25% from the usual 20k miles + taxes. But if you have Citi ThankYou points on top of this, you’ll only have to transfer 12k miles (!!) to Flying Blue due to Citi’s transfer bonus! 💸
Do take advantage if you are looking to get to Europe! 🧳
