Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Juneteenth: Many workplaces and offices will be off tomorrow for Juneteenth - Happy Juneteenth to all and enjoy your long weekend if you have one!

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone is doing well 😊

June has been a crazy month so far! I took last week off from the newsletter as I was in Guadalajara for the World Cup! I was rooting for South Korea to win against the Czech Republic, and thankfully they did just that!! Good vibes, good food, and again, another trip enhanced by points and miles 🙂

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Andares Guadalajara during my time there, and got a suite upgrade as a Globalist. Was not expecting that, especially during the World Cup, so that was awesome!

More trips are coming for me, and I imagine for many of you given its summer. Hope they are all as exciting and wonderful as my trip just was! 🧳

In today’s edition:

💎 Chase Sapphire Updates 💎

Mixed changes to the card, but a big signup bonus either way!

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is probably the most recommended travel card - a low annual fee with easy to use benefits is appealing to a lot of people, for sure!

Chase last week announced some changes to the card, so I thought I’d go over them. I would’ve written about it last week had I not been away, but better late than never:

  • $95 annual fee (unchanged)

  • No foreign transaction fees (unchanged)

  • Primary car rental insurance (unchanged)

  • $100 annual hotel credit on Chase Travel (increased from $50)

  • Card earns:

    • 5x on Chase Travel (unchanged)

    • 3x on dining, streaming and online grocery (unchanged)

    • 3x on Gas/EV (NEW)

    • 3x on Airbnb, VRBO, Plum Guide, HomeAway, Homestay.com, and Vacasa (NEW)

    • 2x on other travel (unchanged)

    • 1x on all other purchases (unchanged)

    • 5x on Lyft rides through 9/30/27. 5x on Peloton purchases of $150+ through 12/31/27. (unchanged)

  • $120 credit once every 4 years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS (NEW)

  • Complimentary Apple TV subscription for 1 year when activated by 12/31/26 (NEW)

  • Transfers to Hyatt devalued to 4:3 (NEW)

  • DashPass membership for 12 months & $10 promo each month (unchanged)

What you think of the changes will depend on your spending and behavior. But if you stay at Hyatt, this is undoubtedly an overall negative change, as you now need to get the Sapphire Reserve to maintain the 1:1 transfer ratio. Both Sapphire Preferred and Ink Preferred will have a 4:3 transfer ratio to Hyatt, which is a big negative. 😢

For cardholders that don’t stay or spend at Hyatt, this is probably overwhelmingly positive. New earning categories, including gas, and a $100 hotel credit now for a $95 annual fee? At face value, that’s great, and with all the other credits and benefits on top, this is positive 👍️

If you haven’t had this card yet, the 100k bonus surely is reason to get it now - even if you are saddened by the Hyatt changes, this is a keeper card at best if you value the $100 hotel credit at face value, and a churn and downgrade in year two card at worst.

Still wish they added 3x for all groceries and not just online groceries though! Existing cardholders will have until October 1st to enjoy the current benefits and transfer ratios as they are, but hope the changes are positive for you 🤞

🏦➡️✈️ Transfer Bonuses

A chart of transfer partners by bank, along with other information, can be found here! New transfer bonuses not present the week before are in bold. Two notes: 1) that any transfers to Avios essentially include British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, and Qatar, and 2) that if you have the Chase Aeroplan credit card, any Aeroplan transfer bonuses are 10% extra!

🚨 Earn 5x Points for Q3 2026 🚨

Chase Freedom 5x categories for Q3!

With Q3 right around the corner, wanted to bring back this section on quarterly rotating categories. Just incase you are not familiar: cards with rotating categories give extra rewards for certain categories of card spend, like gas, flights, groceries, and more.

For Q3 2026, the categories are:

Card

Spend Categories

Rewards during Q3

Chase Freedom Flex (Chase Freedom too)

Gas/EV, public transit, live entertainment and United Way

5x/5% back, up to $1500 in the quarter (7500 points total)

Citi Dividend (no longer open to new applicants)

Gas Stations, Home Improvement stores

5x/5% back, up to $6000 on all rotating category spend in the year

Discover It

Gas/EV, Transportation (from airlines to bus and in between!), Drugstores

5% back, up to $1500 in the quarter (7500 points total)

1Let me know if I’ve missed any cards with rotating categories!

These rotating categories can be hit-or-miss, but for people who do spend money on these categories, this will really help you earn more rewards!

It’s a big gas quarter for all of these cards - with high gas prices due to the current state of affairs in the Middle East, gas spend will be a bit higher than in previous quarters for most. At least you get to earn 5x for it 🤷

With the United Way category, I imagine it would be possible to make a donation via credit card, earn 5x points, and then get a tax deduction from them for your tax returns? I’m only guessing though - I’d consult with them and a tax professional to confirm.

As always, happy earning 💸

  • 💰️ Paze is running a promotion where you can get $10 back for spending $10 - this promotion has run a bit wild with Newegg shutting down Paze as a payment option but is still on for other merchants!

  • 🍎 You can earn Flying Blue miles for Apple purchases through a dedicated Apple link!

  • 🇸🇬 June’s Spontaneous Escapes are here!

  • 🏨 Barclays announced some updates to its portfolio of Wyndham cards - mixed changes but the removal of bonus earning on gas is a bit hit…

💳️ Best Card Signup Bonuses 💳️

Again, the usual solid cards:

Do search for public links for the above cards to compare signup bonuses to make sure you get the highest one (incognito mode, Resy, etc.).

For cards with elevated signup bonuses (targeted bonuses are not included), I’ve got:

Card

Bonus

Annual Fee

Why Consider?

Hilton Honors Card

100k Hilton Honors points + $100 statement credit after $2k spend in 6 months

$0

A new elevated bonus! Not bad for a no annual fee card!

Hilton Honors Surpass Card

130k Hilton Honors points after $3k spend in 6 months

$0 for the first year, then $150

A new elevated bonus! Should be a easy cancel in year 2 for churners.

Hilton Honors Aspire Card

175k Hilton Honors points after $6k spend in 6 months

$550

I still think this is the single best hotel card in the market. With an elevated bonus too now!

Chase Ink Cash

100k Chase UR points after $8k spend in 4 months

$0

Great bonus for a no annual fee!

Chase Ink Unlimited

100k Chase UR points after $8k spend in 4 months
