Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Great Analysis of Hyatt Changes: Thrifty Traveler did an awesome review of the Hyatt Category and Rate Changes (the changes themselves are not awesome, obviously). Take a look here!

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone is doing well 😊

So yeah: the Hyatt changes went into effect earlier this week, and yeah, it isn’t pretty. The Park Hyatt Niseko in Japan is showing rates up to 75k points per night during peak ski season (used to be 45k per night). Brutal changes!

Luckily, I think I got my main bookings done, and I didn’t have anything crazy on the horizon anyway. I did book some other travel recently though, including to Mexico and to Malaysia! More on that later ✈️

Just want to say that I hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day weekend, even if in the Northeast it will likely rain for most of it! Today’s newsletter is a short one, so on to the stories!

In today’s edition:

📉 Emirates Devals 📉

Emirates is back at it again, making their loyalty program worse!

In recently history, they’ve devalued, raised fuel surcharges, restricted first class awards to elite members, and decreased the transfer ratio with its bank partners. Now, they’re devaluing again!

No specific chart here for the devaluation, but everything has gone up by around 15%. Some examples include:

  • Newark to Athens on First Class used to cost 102k miles each way, and now costs 117k miles

  • New York to Dubai on First Class used to cost 163.5k miles each way, and now costs 188k miles

  • Houston to Dubai to Johannesburg on First Class used to cost 187.5k miles each way, and now costs 216k miles

There’s one good change that they’ve made, which is that they’ve brought back saver-level awards for one-way business class. They have saver-level and flex-level (flex level is more expensive), and they previously only allowed saver-level pricing for roundtrip business class. But not anymore!

An example of the saver-level pricing vs flex pricing!

A silver lining in what’s otherwise more of the same from Emirates as of late. But honestly? I haven’t ever transferred points to Emirates for a redemption and don’t plan on it, so I’m not too affected by this. Hopefully you all aren’t too affected by it either 🤞

🏦➡️✈️ Transfer Bonuses

A chart of transfer partners by bank, along with other information, can be found here! New transfer bonuses not present the week before are in bold. Two notes: 1) that any transfers to Avios essentially include British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Finnair, and Qatar, and 2) that if you have the Chase Aeroplan credit card, any Aeroplan transfer bonuses are 10% extra!

🇸🇬 Singapore Escape, Size Small 🇸🇬

Photo by Samuel T on Unsplash

Singapore released this month’s Krisflyer Spontaneous Escapes! As per usual, Singapore releases discounted award flights in the form of Spontaneous Escapes on the 15th of every month. All deals released are 30% off 💰️

The details to keep note of are that:

  • You must complete your booking by May 31st 📆

  • Travel booked through this can take place between June 1st and June 30th, 2026 📆

  • Awards are non-refundable and non-changeable (so be careful)

As I’ve hinted at in the title of this section, this month’s deals are not as plentiful as previous months. I think the current fuel crisis related to the events in Iran must have some effect here…

For the past few months, these Singapore Spontaneous Escapes have had nothing to/from North America and barely anything to Europe. It’s a concern, but there are still flights to various parts of Asia and Australia, should that interest anyone!

I usually post these on a monthly basis. I probably won’t for a while until these monthly offers return to pre-Iran war levels, just because its not as exciting now, but wanted to give everyone a heads up 👍️

The Flying Blue monthly promotions haven’t been as affected. In fact, I think I can say that the Flying Blue monthly promotions haven’t really changed at all. So hopefully I can somehow manifest the long-haul Singapore flights making a return to these monthly deals as quick as possible!!

  • 🤝 Amex and Fanatics have announced a partnership, with a credit card coming and members eventually being able to transfer points to FanCash.

    • If I know anything about Fanatics, that credit card is going to have the artwork printed slightly off center and slanted 😂
