Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Hyatt Reminder: Hyatt’s award chart and category changes will go into effect in two weeks, on May 20th… Book before then to lock in current pricing!

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone is doing well 😊

You know who’s not doing well? Spirit, who as of May 2nd, has ceased operations

I know they were basically the laughingstock of US airlines, but honestly, I kind of liked them! It was nice knowing I can take some short flight for cheap instead of paying more at some larger airline for not much improvement. I’m also biased because I had Spirit Gold status for some time - I’d get the exit row and request my free water bottle and snack on every flight! Fun times.

Sad to see them go, but that business model didn’t look great, especially at the end there. I’m concerned slightly for Frontier, who’s sort of all alone in that ultra low cost niche now.

Best of luck to them 🤞

In today’s edition:

✈️ 25% Off to Europe, May Edition 📆

Photo by Adam Khan on Unsplash

It’s the first newsletter of May, so as per usual, Flying Blue’s monthly Promo Rewards are back!

If you are not familiar: Flying Blue (mileage program of Air France and KLM) releases Flying Blue Promo Rewards, which are monthly promotions where routes between Europe and select destinations globally are offered for 25% off the original mileage price. Every month!

For this month, the US cities selected for this discount are New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Raleigh/Durham, Phoenix, Dallas, Orlando, Denver, San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles (coming from Europe only), Seattle, Miami, Boston, Austin, and Portland! ✈️

They’ve got deals across the globe for this month as usual, with business class deals from Europe to India as well as Central and South America! Lots of exciting flight routes in the offers for the month!

So without these promo rewards, economy flights from North America to Europe start at 25k miles each way + taxes & fees. With the 25% off from these deals, that now goes down to 18.75k miles each way (same taxes & fees). I’ve used these deals to travel to Europe and back before too! Business class deals for this month start at 63.75k each way as well!

Remember, just because these deals come from Air France and KLM does not mean you have to go to France or the Netherlands! Their intra-European network is far and wide, and as long as your origin or destination is a city selected for this month’s discounts, you’ll get 25% off, no matter the European airport involved. 🇪🇺

The Air France-KLM World Elite Mastercard also currently has an elevated bonus of 70k miles and 100 XP (60 on approval, 40 after hitting minimum spend) after spending $3k in 3 months. The card also gives you 5k points if you spend $50 on it in a year, which definitely helps to offset the $89 annual fee! XP, by the way, are points to get Flying Blue status, and 100 XP immediately gets you Flying Blue Silver status. Worth a look if you have a use for the miles or the XP for Flying Blue status 💳️

Exciting stuff from Flying Blue for May - happy travels if you find and book something that works for you!

💸 Many 150k Bonuses 💸

Suddenly, a bunch of 150k bonuses are live!

This would normally be in the “Best Card Signup Bonuses” section in the bottom, but since there are a few of these, I thought I might as well write about them!

150k points is great, especially when the previous bonus was around 80-100k! So we currently have:

Great stuff! The 12k spend in 6 months could be a barrier to some, but if you can manage it, the bonus is pretty great! For anyone with funds parked at Schwab or Morgan Stanley, there’s some added benefits to having this too, like:

  • For the Morgan Stanley Platinum:

    • First Additional Platinum Card Free for the Morgan Stanley Platinum. There is no annual fee for Companion Platinum Cards

    • Redeem points as cash, credited to your E*TRADE or Morgan Stanley account, at 1 cent per point, with no limits

    • Morgan Stanley Annual Engagement Bonus – up to $895 annually into your Platinum CashPlus account offsetting the annual fee. This requires a Platinum CashPlus account, Morgan investment relationship, $5k monthly deposits + $25k daily cash balance requirements to avoid CashPlus fees.

  • For the Schwab Platinum:

    • Redeem points as cash, credited to your Schwab brokerage or retirement account, at 1.1 cents per point. There is a limit of 1M points, after which the cents per point go down to .8 cents.

Schwab Appreciation Bonus – an annual statement credit based on Schwab assets: $100 with $250k+, $200 with $1M+, $1,000 with $10M+.

  • Both of these Platinum cards come with all of the other benefits that the standard one comes with, including all the lounge access and statement credits, hotel status, etc.

If these cards make sense for you, the 150k bonus that comes along with it certainly will. The Platinum bonuses will stick around until July - TBD on when the CSR bonus is going away. But some great offers I hope some people will take advantage of!

  • 🤝 Rove Miles has added Aeroplan as a 1:1 transfer partner, with a 25% transfer bonus until June 6th!

    • I’ll likely add Rove bonuses on the transfer bonuses chart above going forward.

  • Emirates posted a record profit of $6.6B for the 2025-2026 fiscal year (4/1/25-3/31/26).

    • Employees received a 20-week salary bonus as part of their profit sharing program. Couldn’t be me…

💳️ Best Card Signup Bonuses 💳️

Again, the usual solid cards:

Do search for public links for the above cards to compare signup bonuses to make sure you get the highest one (incognito mode, Resy, etc.).

For cards with elevated signup bonuses (targeted bonuses are not included), I’ve got:

Why Consider?

Air France KLM Visa Signature® Credit Card

$89

A solid signup bonus, and enough XP earned for Flying Blue Silver status!

Solid bonus for a solid card! It also gives you 25k status until the end of next year!!
