💳 Deals to Europe, Robinhood's New Card & More News and Deals from Sense per Point ✈️

Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Avianca Sale: Avianca’s award sale is still ongoing! Some good value for travel to Central and South America!!

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone is doing well 😊

March is upon us, and hopefully that’ll mean the snow stops… It’s also a big sports month with March Madness, of course, as well as the return of F1! Very excited for that this weekend!!

Speaking of things to do this weekend: I talk about this from time to time, but if you have a Bank of America card, you have free access to some museums this weekend (first weekend of the month)! Do check that out - I take advantage of it myself when I can and have a great time 👍️

With that, let’s get into our stories!

In today’s edition:

✈️ 25% Off to Europe, March Edition 📆

Photo by Adam Khan on Unsplash

It’s the first newsletter of March, so as per usual, Flying Blue’s monthly Promo Rewards are back!

If you are not familiar: Flying Blue (mileage program of Air France and KLM) releases Flying Blue Promo Rewards, which are monthly promotions where routes between Europe and select destinations globally are offered for 25% off the original mileage price. Every month!

For this month, the US cities selected for this discount are Miami, Orlando, Seattle, Detroit, Chicago, Portland, San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Atlanta, Houston, and Washington D.C.! ✈️

Destinations for March!

They’ve got deals across the globe for this month, with business class deals from Europe to Africa as well as Central and South America! Lots of exciting flight routes in the offers for the month! Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal also have business class deals to Europe!!

So without these promo rewards, economy flights from North America to Europe start at 25k miles each way + taxes & fees. With the 25% off from these deals, that now goes down to 18.75k miles each way (same taxes & fees). I’ve used these deals to travel to Europe and back before too! Business class deals start at 45k each way as well!

Remember, just because these deals come from Air France and KLM does not mean you have to go to France or the Netherlands! Their intra-European network is far and wide, and as long as your origin or destination is a city selected for this month’s discounts, you’ll get 25% off, no matter the European airport involved. 🇪🇺

The Air France-KLM World Elite Mastercard also currently has an elevated bonus of 70k miles and 100 XP (60 on approval, 40 after hitting minimum spend) after spending $3k in 3 months. The card also gives you 5k points if you spend $50 on it in a year, which definitely helps to offset the $89 annual fee! XP, by the way, are points to get Flying Blue status, and 100 XP immediately gets you Flying Blue Silver status. Worth a look if you have a use for the miles or the XP for Flying Blue status 💳️

Exciting stuff from Flying Blue for March - happy travels if you find and book something that works for you!

🪶 The new Robinhood Platinum 🪶

Well, this is interesting.

So, we have a new “platinum” card, this time from Robinhood! Did not expect to write out a sentence like that in this newsletter, but here we are. I’ll start by saying that the card looks like a massive coupon book, but here are the exact details (with terms):

  • $695 annual fee

  • Cash back looks like:

    • 10% on Hotels through Robinhood’s travel portal

    • 5% on Dining on the first $50,000 in spend per year. ‘Dining’, including restaurants, takeout, and delivery

    • 5% on Flights through Robinhood’s travel portal

    • 1% on all other purchases

  • Memberships:

    • Robinhood Gold (normally $5 per month)

    • Oura ($70 value)

    • Function Health ($365 value)

    • Amazon Health ($199 value)

  • Priority pass select membership with unlimited access for primary cardholder.

  • Global Entry/TSA Credit (up to $120 every 4 years)

  • Credits:

    • $250 Doordash Credit.

      • Two $10 credits per month, and three $10 credits in December. Order must be $50+ to qualify…

    • $250 Restaurant Credit

      • One $20 credit per month, and one $30 credit in December. Valid at 15,000 participating restaurants

    • $500 Hotel Credit

      • One $250 credit every six months. Valid on qualifying luxury hotel bookings through Robinhood travel portal. Can use up to $100 of that towards standard hotel bookings.

    • $300 Travel Credit

      • One $150 credit every six months. Valid on rideshares, hotels, flights, and other travel-related purchases. Doesn’t need to be booked through Robinhood portal.

    • $250 Autonomous Credit

      • One $20 credit per month, and one $30 credit in December. Valid for for qualifying autonomous ride purchases.

    • $200 Wearables credit (idk what this exactly is yet)

One thing to clarify is that members cannot hold both the Robinhood Gold and the Robinhood Platinum - they will have to upgrade the Gold to the Platinum to get this if they wish.

Anyways, my initial thoughts:

  • That DoorDash credit sucks 👎️

  • Most of the bank’s travel portals seem to be inflated at times when trying to get more cash back, so we will have to see if Robinhood’s travel portal also has inflated rates 🤷

  • 5% back on dining is great!

  • The hotel credit seems similar to the Amex FHR and Chase The Edit credits, for reference. That could mean value to some, and garbage to others.

  • Not for me, but I don’t buy and use wearable devices! If you do, maybe this is worth a look?

  • Is there a signup bonus?

I personally don’t have money in Robinhood anymore after the whole Gamestop fiasco a few years back, and so this is a no for me. I’ve already got the Amex Platinum and other coupon book credit cards to deal with!!

That being said, for Robinhood users and for some others, this card could definitely work. The travel credit seems very easy to use, and for anyone that use wearables or DoorDash regularly, this definitely makes sense.

Well, make of all that what you will! Happy earning, on this card or any other card 💳️

💳️ Best Card Signup Bonuses 💳️

Again, the usual solid cards:

Do search for public links for the above cards to compare signup bonuses to make sure you get the highest one (incognito mode, Resy, etc.).

For cards with elevated signup bonuses (targeted bonuses are not included), I’ve got:

Card

Bonus

Annual Fee

Why Consider?

Synchrony Virgin Red

60k Virgin Points after $4k spend in 3 months

$99

This is usually 40k points, so a higher bonus than usual! Solid “cancel in year 2” candidate here.

Air France KLM Visa Signature® Credit Card

70k Flying Blue miles + 100XP after $3k spend in 3 months

$89

A solid signup bonus, and enough XP earned for Flying Blue Silver status!

Capital One Venture

75k points + $250 in travel credits after $4k spend in the first 3 months

$95

That nice bonus is back!

Chase Aeroplan Card

85k points after $4k spend in 3 months

$95

Solid bonus for a solid card! It also gives you 25k status until the end of next year!!
