Making Sense of Points & Miles :)

Solid Signup Bonus: The Capital One Venture, if you haven’t noticed, is back with its 75k points + $250 travel credit signup bonus! Not a bad haul for a $95 annual fee card 💪

Welcome Back!

Hope everyone is doing well 😊

Late February has often been a sad time in the points & miles world if you are a Hyatt fan: They announce their hotel category changes around that time of year annually.

And yeah, while the changes could have been worse, lots of hotels went up in award cost. Staying in Hyatts when visiting Tokyo using points just got more expensive, across the board…

If you are a Hyatt fan like me, we can commiserate with each other. Also, like every single Hyatt I’ve stayed at for my travels over the past few years has gone up in category and award costs - do I just have a knack for finding hotels before they go up in price?? 🤔

But always the note of optimism: It could have been worse, and there are still pockets of value in Hyatt and in points & miles to take advantage of!

In today’s edition:

🚨 Flash Sales Alert 🚨

We’ve got quite a few sales going on among various airlines, so I’ll go through them all!

Some sample costs from this Delta Flash Sale!

I think the 54k roundtrip to New Zealand looks pretty solid - 27k each way to the South Pacific sounds nice! Qantas charges 40k one way to get to New Zealand from NYC, and has higher fuel surcharges too!

Next, we’ve got Southwest, who is offering up to 30% off of flights with code 30SPLASH. This also ends today, and most displayed fares should have the discounted price already showing!

The Southwest sale leaves a bit to be desired, as the sales are up to, and not all at, 30%. But a sale is a sale, so do take advantage if you can! Better yet, if you had already booked a more expensive fare on Southwest, cancel and rebook for the cheaper price, as their cancellation policy is like the best in the game!

Lastly, we’ve got Breeze, who is offering 45% off base fares with promo code ESCAPE. I don’t have a whole lot to say about this one, but it does end tomorrow. If you’ve got travel coming up that can make use of this sale, go for it!!

These airlines, and others, run sales like this from time to time, so always be on the lookout for things like this! Traveling is great, but traveling for less can be even better 👍️

🛩️ A Quick JetBlue Guide 🛩️

JetBlue has been a Chase, Amex, and Citi transfer partner for a while, but recently became Capital One’s newest transfer partner! Although Capital One’s transfer ratio to JetBlue is a dismal 5:3 (1000 Capital One miles = 600 JetBlue miles), Citi and Chase do have 1:1 transfer ratios to JetBlue. Anyway, I thought it may be worth going through what I think are the best ways to use JetBlue miles!

When using JetBlue miles for JetBlue flights, the price in miles is often tied to the cash price (similar to Southwest). So the cheaper the flight is using cash, the cheaper the mileage cost will be too. This does make the value of JetBlue miles relatively consistent, but for those who want to maximize their CPP (cents per point), using JetBlue miles for JetBlue flights will likely not be the option of choice 🙅

When using JetBlue miles for some of their partner airlines, however, the value gets a bit better! You can redeem JetBlue miles on airlines like Qatar, Etihad, and TAP Portugal.

Some quick searches on JetBlue for flights from JFK to Qatar (DOH) show that economy flights cost 39k JetBlue miles, while Business Class costs 98k miles:

Booking with Qatar miles directly is cheaper!

As for Etihad, a sample search from JFK-AUH shows economy flights prices at 59.9k miles one-way. That is an absurd amount, do not redeem this way! I also could not find business class tickets available, so for the moment I have no idea what the mileage price is for that. I’ll update in due course (or maybe Etihad doesn’t even make that available for JetBlue mileage redemptions)…

TAP is JetBlue’s newest mileage redemption partner - based on early indications, economy flights from the US to Portugal price as low as 19k miles each way. Business prices as low as 59k each way! Although there are rumors now that the costs have gone up, this may still be a decent value for some.

So that’s about it! Some partner redemption opportunities are out there, but otherwise the program is offering close to a fixed value. I know, its not the most exciting, but since Capital One did add them as a transfer partner, I thought I’d go through it in case people were curious. But yeah, I don’t and likely won’t transfer points to JetBlue anytime soon, unless I was specifically looking at that 59k business class redemption from the US to Portugal 🇵🇹

Happy travels, with or without JetBlue miles! 🧳
