Making Sense of Points & Miles :)
Free Coffee: Starbucks is offering free coffee on Monday! A nice post-Super Bowl coffee to get your week started ☕️
Welcome Back!
Hope everyone is doing well 😊
So yeah, the Super Bowl is this weekend! That’s going to mean a lot of pizza, wings, and time off work the next day - did you know that Monday after the Super Bowl is one of the most missed days of work in America?
I’m not even sure who to root for, to be honest - I just want the ads and the food to be good. Getting 4x points on restaurant spend with the Amex Gold though sure helps with that!
If you plan on watching it, happy footballing, and if not, happy weekend otherwise! Let’s dive right in 🏊️
In today’s edition:

✈️ 25% Off to Europe, February Edition 📆
It’s now February, meaning that Flying Blue’s monthly Promo Rewards are back!
As usual, on the first of the month, Flying Blue (mileage program of Air France and KLM) releases Flying Blue Promo Rewards, which are monthly promotions where routes between Europe and select destinations globally are offered for 25% off the original mileage price. Every month!
For this month, the US cities selected for this discount are New York, Boston, Denver, Houston, Raleigh/Durham and Ottawa ✈️

February’s locations for this deal!
Without these promo rewards, economy flights from North America to Europe start at 25k miles each way + taxes & fees. With the 25% off from these deals, that now goes down to 18.75k miles each way (same taxes & fees). Yes, it used to be cheaper, but this rewards program devalued last month… But deals are still deals, even if a bit more expensive.
Remember, just because these deals come from Air France and KLM does not mean you have to go to France or the Netherlands! Their intra-European network is far and wide, and as long as your origin or destination is a city selected for this month’s discounts, you’ll get 25% off, no matter the European airport involved.
There are some routes on sale in business too, like Europe to Bogota, Havana, and Conakry, among others! 🌍️
Using points, this is among the more reliable ways to get to Europe in terms of availability. Other programs may have cheaper award costs, but probably not as much coverage across the whole continent. Programs like Iberia, Emirates and Virgin have cheaper costs to get to Europe, but only to a few cities, whereas this deal covers all European airports. Just something to think about!
This deal is a bit less appetizing after the devaluations, I will admit - it’s so weird seeing the discounted prices starting at a not-round number like 18,750 miles as opposed to the previous 15k…
So do take a look here if you have a trip to Europe coming up or want to plan one! 🧳

🤝 Fly with a Companion 🤝

If you’re not a solo traveler like me, you are probably booking multiple tickets at a time. With points, it can sometimes be tough to find multiple seats on flights, but there are some ways to make that process a bit easier: Companion Fares!
Companion Fares in a nutshell are a nice way for a second passenger to join someone on a flight, often at a significant discount. This discount can come in different ways, but usually involves paying the full fare for the first ticket, and then just the taxes & fees for the second ticket. Not too bad!
There are many airlines that offer this type of thing, but right now, I think the easiest companion fares/passes to obtain via credit cards are:
❄️ Alaska: The signup bonuses on Alaska’s credit cards include a companion fare as part of the bonus!
With this companion fare, the companion pays $99 + taxes and fees for the companion (after paying for the first ticket)
🔴 Delta: The Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve cards offer a companion certificate every year!
With this companion certificate, the companion pays just the taxes and fees for the companion (after paying for the first ticket)
💛 Southwest: The current signup bonuses on Southwest cards offer a Companion Pass until 2/28/26!
With the Companion Pass, the companion pays just the taxes and fees for the companion (after paying for the first ticket)
Completely unrelated: You know when you look at a word for so long that it looks like its spelled incorrectly or just looks wrong? The word “Companion” has just become that word for me 😂
But anyway, some great opportunities to fly with someone for a discounted rate! Especially with some Southwest flights charging only $5.60 for taxes and fees, this does represent a great opportunity if you fly with someone often. Do note that Alaska and Delta’s companion deals are a one-time use pass, while Southwest’s Companion Pass lets you bring a companion on every flight you take while the Pass is active!
And if you are serious about Companion Pass, you should earn it the original way and not through the current signup bonuses. Why? Well, you’ll have it for longer if you do!
The signup bonuses currently give you Companion Pass for about a year. If you earn it organically, however (either by flying 100 times with Southwest in a calendar year, or by earning 135k Rapid Rewards points in a calendar year), you earn it for the entirety of the current and following year! And, points earned through credit card signup bonuses (when the bonuses are actually high) count towards the 135k! Something to keep in mind 🧠
So if you have a friend, spouse, or anyone else that you want to fly with at some point, maybe these companion fare deals are worth a look! Happy travels together ❤️
